Four Tet and Lone remix Radiohead

Radiohead, one of the few rocks band that needs no introduction in the electronic music world, have been releasing a series of remixes of songs from their latest album "King of the Limbs" on 12" limited edition vinyl.  Thus far such high-calibre artists and known Radiohead fans as Flying Lotus and Caribou have had a go at a track each.  The latest 12" streaming below includes a rather upbeat remix by Lone, Red Cup's  pick of the three, and an interesting ambient take on "Separator" by Four Tet, with whom Thom Yorke (singer of Radiohead) also collaborated this year, along with Burial, on a 12" only release.  Listen to or order the remix record below:

Alpines - "Cocoon" (Nocturnal Sunshine Remix)

Red Cup spotted this delicious remix of Alpines' "Cocoon" by Maya Jane Coles.  Under her Nocturnal Sunshine monicker, Maya delivers a bouncy electro infused dubstep remix, leaving the original's brilliant vocals intact.  Listen to the instantly rewarding tune below:

Rustie – "Glass Swords"

Red Cup came across a short video on the Warp Records site teasing Glascow musician Rustie’s upcoming album “Glass Swords.”  The video is a lens-overpowering shimmering crystal visual accompaniment to the title track’s audacious combination of fairlight choir stabs, diamond dust sprinkled pads and j-pop guitar solo/vintage μ-ziq inspired synth lead.  This short and quirky teaser doesn’t reveal much with regard to the Rustie album releasing in October, which you can preorder here, but according to Warp “…if anything, this should keep you guessing.

The Sight Below – "At First Touch"

Ghostly International is an overlooked label with a roster that exemplifies the cutting edge of electronic music across the Atlantic.  Aside from Red Cup favorites including Gold Panda, Com Truise, Dabrye and Pale Sketcher, the label also collaborates heavily with a range of visual artists and graphic designers resulting in a multitude of amazing album covers, independent art pieces and clothing.

On August 1st Ghostly newcomer The Sight Below will release album “Glider” on a special edition and limited 2xLPvinyl.  Featured track “At First Touch”, like the rest of the record, emits a subtle and warm feeling akin to a dying fire in a wintery setting.  The subdued drones, punctuated by the rounded 4/4 kicks, never succumb to the electronic music staple trick of brightening up a filter to induce that euphoric crescendo we are all familiar with.  Neither is this Detroit or Berlin inspired techno of the cold-factory machine rhythm kind.  Rather, this is a very unique minimal yet earthy sound, with similarities to the Swiss lake cabin inspired direction taken by Pantha Du Prince (who also remixes one of the songs in the vinyl edition) but ultimately more stripped back, astonishingly optimistic and even more primal.  Red Cup highly recommends you listen to this on earphones or risk missing the point entirely:

CHLLNGR - "May 3"

Coppenhagen based producer CHLLNGR released his debut LP "Haven" this July. His sound (and cover art) is in the ballpark of the Tri Angle records crew with perhaps a touch of that Scandinavian pop sensibility. It hard to pick a highlight from this excellent record and in fact if you heard our Red Cup Summer Mix Vol. 1  you will already be familiar with the title track "Haven".

Album opener "May 3" sets the tone for the rest of the LP with a shuffly beat, spooky syncopated pads and a vocal snippet that sounds like a mangled bit-crushed version of something that fellow countrymen Koop might sample. Listen below:

Dubfire & Carlo Lio - Au Bar Corfu

On Friday 22nd of July, one of Red Cup's top DJs Dubfire, from SCI+TEC made his second  appearance this time with Carlo Lio at Au Bar in Corfu, Greece. Red Cup was lucky to be on holiday in the island of music at the time and was able to attend this spectacular summer night marked by riveting music and great energy from the crowd who had long been anticipating this event organized by Coolstone
Dubfire never ceases to amaze on the decks and this night was no exception. He guided the  crowd through an eclectic dancefloor-oriented set which combined elements of his ever evolving signature sound with a twist of tech-house and a somewhat funkier direction to suit the summer island vibe. Dubfire is a veteran on the scene and his years of experience have granted him a very unique ability to strut the line between leading the crowd musically while adapting to the people's taste and needs when appropriate. This made for a thrilling set of musical discovery, mixed in with variations of familiar favorites, to which the crowd (us included) responded to inevitably by dancing the night away.  According to Dubfire himself he had an amazing night and looks forward to visiting the island again.  We should mention  here that Red Cup unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to catch Carlo's set although we are known fans of his work.
If you're in or around Greece at the time, be sure to catch Dubfire's DJ set at the legendary Cavo Paradiso in Mykono along with Seth Troxler on the 2nd of August.

Red Cup would like to give a special shout out to Tim Price for the great company and for the special care.  It was great to party with old friends.

Check out our very own footage from the event below to catch a glimpse of this special night.

Video: Actress - "Maze"

Here is a new music video for Actress's "Maze", which is taken from the already approaching seminal 2010 Honest Jon’s album ‘Splazsh’. The video was drirected by Luke Alexander and uses much of the hexagonal shapes of the record’s cover art. Watch it, and get lost in the maze.

Listen: Klaus - Tusk E.P.

London-based producer Klaus (Nick Sigsworth) has dropped Tusk, his debut EP on R&S early for us to enjoy on Soundcloud.  Klaus has definitely taken his time, considering the titular track first appeared on Mount Kimbie's XLR8R podcast last September, and since then his few releases have been in the form of remixes for the duo. With Tusk, Klaus sets out on his own with four darkly atmospheric electronic pieces. The EP is said to drop August 15.

Ifan Dafydd - "Miranda" & "No Good"

Once rumored to be James Blake’s secret alter ego Ifan Dafydd  has been making a name all on his own with some exciting music that's equal parts jittery and glitchy. With support from the likes of Jamie xx, who lists him as one of his top 10 producers it’s safe to say whoever he is the tunes speak for themselves. Enjoy the stream of choice cut “Miranda” and the video for the Amy Winehouse sampling “No Good” Below…

Listen: Burial – "Shell of Light" (Shlohmo Remix)

Shlohmo dropped this incredible new remix of Burial’s “Shell of Light” Shlohmo has absolutely reconstructed this track from the ground up, taking one simple loop from the end of the original and making it an entirely new track all its own, with some dense, atmospheric bass and percussion as well as some vocals by the man himself.

Mitzi – "Morning Light" (Softwar Remix)

Something to end your night off with…  Part 3 of 3 in the Mitzi remix series, this time with an anthemic slow house weapon by fellow Australian's Softwar.

Red Cup Summer Mix Vol. 1

The time has finally come for Red Cup  to take a 2 week break and do some much needed Greek island hopping.  Times are tough - sprits and budgets are low, yet when the sun and the volume are high everything seems better.  Therefore, we couldn't leave without something special for those who have stopped by and supported Red Cup thus far.

Here it is, our first (in a series?) of summer mixtapes intended to keep you company at the beach, on the way to the beach, on the way home from the beach etc.  In the true spirit of our blog, the mix crosses all genres of electronic music but is cohesive in its summeriness. We hope this will hold you over until we get back.

Thank you for your support and  see you again in two weeks.  Until then, may your cup be red and half-full.  Listen to or download the Red Cup Summer Mix Vol. 1 below:

John Beltran - "Brilliant Flood " (Kassem Mosse & Mix Mup Remix)

John Beltran, member of the Delsin records family, released his latest EP in early July with remixes by Kassem Mosse & Sven Weisemann.   On the A-Side, Kassem Mosse takes on Beltran's track keeping the original intact but dressing it with ambient decor and a heavy bassline...it really is a "Brilliant Flood."  Listen below:

Ital Tek - "Ulysses" and "Whit it Up EP"

Ital Tek just released "Ulysses" as a freebie though his very own Atom River label.  As is evident in this track, the Brighton producer has found a particularly succesful and unique formula letting his compressed bass music rhythm section punch through his cavernous atmospherics.  You can listen to and download "Ulysses" below.  You'll want to hear more which is why Red Cup  also included the mini promo-mix of Ital Tek's EP "Whip it Up" for you to listen to below.  You can buy the EP here

Benga - "Midnight"

Dubstep pionneer and bassline connaisseur Benga (he's written a track called "26 Basslines" which does exactly what it says) just announced that he would release his new song "Midnight" for free on his soundcloud account.  The track is a return to form (and roots) for Benga, after his trip to the poppier side of dubstep on the Magnetic Man project alongside Skream and Artwork (good luck finding his page on Google).

This time Benga's bassline could best be desribed as the sound of a stalling engine on some futuristic hover-car.  And we mean that in a good way. You can listen to or download "Midnight" below:

The Prodigy - Live at the Rockwave festival (Athens, Greece 03.07.2011)

While digging up our old Prodigy records in anticipation for their concert on the third day of the annual Rockwave Festival in Athens, it dawned on us that The Prodigy are the Rolling Stones of our generation. The similarities are striking: both bands took an underground genre to the mainstream among widespread accusations that their "noise" was not music, they both made revolutionary anthems with controversial messages and themes in periods where the clean-cut boy band aesthetic ruled the airwaves, they both wrote powerful and energetic music that resonated in the youth of their generation and, finally, years after their peak, both bands surpassed all expectations refusing to stop doing what they do best. Admittedly, with the exception of a few good singles here and there, both band's latest records are nothing to write home about...yet it is in the live environment where even these 'lesser' songs come to life and approach the greatness of their classic siblings. Simply put, the confines of our home stereo systems don't do justice to the visceral music of these bands.

2 Many DJs - Radio Soulwax online (plus apps)

Add this link on your bookmarks now http://www.radiosoulwax.com/ or risk missing out on what's looking to be THE free online audio/visual experience of the the summer.  The knob twiddlers from Ghent (our 2nd favorite city in Belgium after Bruges...sorry for the blatant favoritism, it's personal) are back offering up their latest creative endeavors on their site in their capacity as Radio Soulwax... don't make us explain the origin behind each of their monickers, this excellent documentary about the band of brothers (that's a cool name for them too ;)) does it better than we ever could or just check out this short interview from one of Red Cup's  own taken a while back when the duo were in Athens, Greece.

Their site will start streaming this sure to be huge mix by the Belgian giants on Monday, July 4th.  Until then you can still listen to their previous project "Introversy" on the very same link.

According the press release: "The visuals you will see here are crafted, inspired and lovingly animated using the imagery from the sleeves of the very records that shape each and every thematic hour in the 24-hour mix. At times the visuals themselves have even driven, informed and helped re-imagine the audio parts you’ll hear simultaneously…Each and every one of these painstakingly produced hours is fun, different and geared to trigger individual reactions unique to the viewer, listener, consumer etc.

The service is free, and the mixes will not be released in any other form. In addition to the live online feed, Radio Soulwax will be available to stream and download via a special iPhone/iPad/Android application. You will be able to download this from the Apple and Google App stores as of Monday."

Martyn - "Masks"

We just came across this rip from Benji B's show of long-time Red Cup favorite and multi-talented artist the mighty Martyn's forthcoming 12" release on Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus' label).  The track is called "Masks" and it's exemplary of Martyn's signature combination of detroit techno influences with dubstep production techniques.

Look out for the "Masks/Viper" release coming out in August on digital formats and September on 12" vinyl.  Listen to the track below:
